Upcycled Project: Tshirt Yarn Crocheted Into Bathroom Rug

I’ve always been a fan of rag rugs. But often if you aren’t selecting a color scheme they look a bit to country style for what I wanted. I wanted to make a rag rug by upcycling materials and have it be a fun bright color scheme for our bathroom, which has a claw foot tub and vintage tiles (our house is an original 1901 orchard house in Seattle).

I decided on T-Shirt yarn since it has a soft cozy feel to it vs. sheets or other old fabric. I had to buy many of the Tshirts at goodwill (they have a .99 tshirt wall). I used about 18 or so Tshirts in Grey tones and yellow tones to make this.

I was thinking of doing a tutorial on this, but there are so many great “make tshirt yarn” tutorials and sources on crochet, it seemed redundant.

This rug is about 2×3 feet, it took 4 hours to crochet with a size “P” hook.  it took about the same amount of time to just make the T-shirt yarn…my least favorite part 😉

  1. I love the rug. This would be a great rug for my college daughter to have. Easy to make and easy to care for. Love your old tub too!

I found your site from Debbies Newbie Party! I am now following you.

  2. Looks amazing! Could you send me a larger photo of the rug, say 640 pixels wide, (today if possible?) with the bathtub, would love to feature it! Also, did you add a chain stitch down the side for stability or for looks? Would love to know, and of course while I’ve crocheted something similar a tutorial would be great since I it’s always interesting to see if someone else has some helpful hints!

Questions? Comments? I'd love to hear!
